About The Authoress

Donna Heodez Sofonisba de Talento Minotto is a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) residing in the Middle Kingdom, within the Barony of the Middle Marches in the shire of Tirnewydd.  She is a former Middle Kingdom Arts & Sciences Champion.  Apart from period cosmetics her interests include costuming, fiber arts, European dance, Middle Eastern dance, and most of the studio arts.

The purpose of this blog is to serve as a virtual book of secrets.  Throughout the Italian Renaissance, women of various social classes, from the courtesan to the noble and middle class woman, keep journals known as experimenti or segreti.  This was her personal collection of recipes for cosmetics, dyes, medicines, or sometimes food.  Some recipes were collected from other sources, some were her own invention, but they all came to be her personal go-to guide.

During Pennsic this year, I will be teaching two classes, with each one being taught twice. Barring any last minute changes, I am teaching my two hour Grooming; Medieval Style class on July 30, 2014 @ 11am in A&S 10 and also on August 4 @ 3pm in A&S 10. My second class, Scented Waters; Easy Period Perfumes in happening on July 30 @ 1pm in A&S 13 and again on August 7 @ 4pm in A&S 13. Check the Pennsic Universoty book for more details. I will also be bringing some of my recipes to the Known World Craftperson’s Faire at Pennsic.

Recently, I began hosting a gathering at my home called “Herbal Afternoon”. Basically, I invite folks over to look through my herbals, make some things, and try new recipes with whatever my herb garden can offer. The next one is coming up on September 14, 2014. We’ll be making/trying various medieval skin care recipes. Hopefully, we’ll have some lavender champagne to sip on as well.
